Dear guests.
For my show and tell presentation, I would like to tell you about accordions. The presentation will be split under different headings, the first of these being “what is an accordion?”
What is an accordion?
An accordion is a musical instrument with handheld bellows and what is known as a free reed aerophone.
It can sound two different chords with the same key, one for each direction of the bellows - this is called a bisonoric action.
Many accordions are “piano accordions”, which have a full set of keys – similar to a modern-day keyboard. However this show and tell presentation uses a “button accordion” – a series of simple melody keys, combined with a bass and chord key.
The second section is called “the history of the accordion”
The history of the accordion
The accordion was originally patented by Cyrill Demian in Vienna in the year of our Lord 18 hundred and 29.
It was one of several musical inventions from early 19th century Europe that used free reeds driven by bellows - notable others including the very similar concertina and the flutina, a melody-only instrument.
It became popular in America thanks to one Count Guido Deiro who was the first piano accordionist to perform in France.
The original style of the instrument is different to what we know today. At that time, it only had a left hand keyboard, with the right hand simply operating the bellows.
It was Cyrill Demian who first developed the bisonoric, or multi-chord, action, distinguishing the accordion from its free-reed peers.
The third section is called “how the accordion works”
How the accordion works
Modern accordions consist of a body in two parts, which are usually rectangular, and are separated by a bellow.
The compression and expansion, or push and pull, of the bellows generates air flow across the reeds while a set of keys control the notes and tones it plays.
The buttons, or keys, when pressed, travel in a direction perpendicular to the motion of the bellows.
The fourth, and final section of this show and tell presentation is called “accordions and the famous people who have played them”.
Accordions and the famous people who have played them
The accordion has been used to create beautiful music in a wide range of genres. From traditional tangos to buskers on the street to pop stars, the instrument has a number of fans from all walks of life, and from many different eras.
Many notable musicians have used the unusual sound of the accordion in their works.
World renowned composer Tchaikovsky used four accordions in his second orchestral suite.
And did you know that the amusing comedian cum songwriter Weird Al Yankovic used the accordion in an episode of Remote Control in 1998? Ha ha ha! I bet that was funny.
Other artists and musicians to adopt their sound include The Pogues, They Might Be Giants, Los Lobos, and indie popster Lisa Horton from Norwich outfit Bearsuit.
I will now give a brief demonstration of the sound an accordion makes by playing a simple scale.
